So this month has been a bit of a mess. I had a cold, I had... female stuff going on, BUT possibly the worst of it was I began having digestive issues, which started at the end of March. I couldn't figure it out, I thought at first maybe it was a bug, but it kept happening and kept happening and kept happening. Then I narrowed it down to ... it was worse whenever I ate or drank anything with milk. Which leads to one awful discovery. Apparently I've become lactose intolerant. YAY. If you know me, you know I love cheese and chocolate milk so what a damn blow. So I took a few days and I drank no chocolate milk and I ate only a minimal amount of cheese once, because I didn't feel like cooking and the TV dinner I chose had a small portion of macaroni and cheese in it. Everything stabilized. Not perfect, but a lot better. But I wasn't giving up hope completely; when I was a kid, my mother cleaned this woman's house and she was lactose intolerant, so I knew about lactaid pills. So after confirming that it was the milk, when I went shopping yesterday, I found a 12 count box of Lactaid at Walmart and bought them.

Supper was a cheeseburger; snack during anime was this lemon pastry which claimed milk, and a SMALL glass of chocolate milk just to test. Took a lactaid pill with each, and then waited. And waited. Nothing like before, when I couldn't even take a sip of chocolate milk without suffering for it. So I think, with some care and buying more of those pills, I'm going to be just fine. Whew.

Alone

Duane isn't a big fan of the holidays. Since his father's death and Evie leaving him, it'd all seemed kind of meaningless. He swirls some brandy around in his glass and pours himself some more, tilting his head as he stares at the bar, tinted red through the liquid. Not a big brandy guy, but it seems ... a little festive, so he goes with it.

Until Nate joins him, like he's been invited, helps himself to a glass and some of the alcohol too. Duane rolls his eyes skyward and drinks some more, ignoring the warmth of the man next to him. "You alright?" Nate finally finds his voice.

"Nope," Duane says simply. Nate doesn't say another word, but he doesn't leave either.

It's kind of weird, but it's nice too. Duane releases a breath as some of the loneliness leaves him.

Daniel grimaces as Brant and Brendan lean over him, worried looks on their faces. One stupid, pathetic accident while ice skating and he's reduced to this. He hisses and sits up, shifting his injured leg slowly. "Boys, you're my only hope," he says. "Every year, I send my grandmama a Christmas card, but I'm not exactly going anywhere with my leg like this. Please... please..."

The twins exchange glances before Brendan nods, taking the card from him. "Of course, Daniel. We'll mail it out for you."

"Thank you," Daniel breathes out, flopping back against the couch. "She's so delicate, not receiving a card from me could..."

As he rambles on, the boys leave, exchanging small smiles as they walk to the car. "He's always so dramatic."

Loss

Alison sits in front of the fire and stares blankly ahead. Her life had changed not that long ago, with the loss of her best friend. She watches the fire lick, crackle, snap against the wood. Many a winter they had spent here, thinking, daydreaming, imagining their futures. But now his is gone and hers is shattered.

She closes her eyes against the warmth and the light, releasing a tired sigh. "You know I would do anything to have you sitting next to me right now," she whispers, glancing down at his spot forlornly. "Absolutely anything." She barely reacts to fireworks as they blast outside.

"Happy New Years, Aaron."
